censoring the news, too

Did everyone see the article on the crime wave in Harrisburg. The link is here: http://www.pennlive.com/search/index.ssf?/base/news/1141986318249610.xml?pennnews&coll=1

Note the final two paragraphs:

"As the crimes piled up, Mayor Stephen R. Reed and police Chief Charles Kellar did not warn residents of the burglaries.
"It may hinder the investigation and the ability to make arrests by providing premature information about the crimes that are being committed," said city spokesman Randy King. "

Why would the Patriot not report on the crimes? Did the City ask them not to? Don't their reporters have the sense to go to the police station and look at the blotter?

Milton has left up the comments about crime being under-reported. I would have posted a comment on that if I could, hopefully adding to the discourse. But apparently that is not what the PennLive Forums are for. Which raises the question - what are they for?

If you don't like the way PennLive.com treats you, why do you hang out there? They have just as much right to police their forums in a manner that they consider to be appropriate as you do to ask (or order) an unwelcome guest to leave your house.

Hey anon:

You really are missing the point. You hold yourself out as a forum for free expression, you are part of the free press, and you censor much legitimate discussion based on either the person engaged in the discussion or the topic. That is simply plain wrong. Are you old enough to understand Fascism? If not, look it up. It is what explains corporations working in conjunction with government to deprive the people of their legitimate freedoms. PennLive is not your personal living room and I am not your personal guest. I and the others on this forum are citizens with rights, responsibilities and privileges being denied us.

You have no more right to be obstructionist in PennLive.com's forums than come to my house and crap on the living room floor.

I don't represent PennLive.com. I was lead here by a comment in the BuzzMachine.com forum; I find your behavior childish. I'm shocked than an attorney -- if you really are one -- would engage in this kind of harassing behavior.

Feel free to look me up - I am indeed an attorney. Since you may need a little hand-holding in your search, here is the link:

As for childish, I do believe you win the prize today.

What's that logic, "I know I am but what are you" or "It takes one to know one."

Should we ask your superiors what they think of your "professional" behavior? What light does this shine on their agency?

In all my years of living in the Harrisburg area, I am blown away that anyone would read PennLive or the Patriot. Both have amateur written all of them, and both are far from being free press. Free press does not censor and falsely print letters to the editor as spokespersons. I suppose that is free, free to print lies and general falsities. The Patriot news at times should be called the Harrisburg checkout rag.

Well, I suppose you have a point. But it is the only real local paper, so the options are few. See my earlier post on how the owners got rid of the competition years ago. The real question is whether there are enough potential readers for a second paper. That seems unlikely. Thus, Harrisburgers are stuck with what we have and our only remedy is to push for better news coverage.

Let him hang out and make a fool of himself. I found another reference to our efforts here yesterday - someone called our blog respondng to censorship a "Sim City moment."
